Quinton, VA— The Historic Second Liberty Baptist Church (SLBC) hosted VUU Day on Sunday September 30th. During morning worship service Dr. Corey D. B. Walker, Dean of the School of Theology at VUU, preached from the subject “A Cross-Shaped Faith”, Acts 4:32-35. That afternoon the VUU Chamber Singers and the Celebration Male Chorus, led by Dr. Willis Barnett were in concert.VUU Day was organized to celebrate the longstanding relationship between SLBC and Virginia Union University. Both institutions have been in existence for over 150 years and were established to continue to encourage and promote the educational and religious freedom of Africans in America. Over the past 150 years SLBC and VUU have shared a close bond through many of the pastors and members of SLBC who have worked or been educated at VUU. Seven of the eleven clergymen to serve as pastors of Second Libertyhave been educated and/or taught at VUU. Their names are: Dr. Andrew Harvey Cumber, William H. Gray, Dr. John Kemp, Dr. Miles Mark Fisher, Dr. George W. Watkins, James W. Mills, and Sean T. Young. VUU Day at SLBC was not only an opportunity to celebrate the longstanding relationship but to raise money for the scholarship fund at VUU. The church and its members were able to raise $2500 for the scholarship fund at VUU. The donation will be presented to VUU during the SLBC 152nd Church Anniversary on Sunday October 21st.
The Inception of Second Liberty Baptist Church
The inception of Second Liberty Baptist Church dates back to 1866, one year after the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution legally abolished slavery. During this time, Blacks who lived in the St. Peters’ District of New Kent were required to worship at Emmaus Baptist Church. Blacks were restricted to the balcony, which was common at that time. Our journey actually begins in 1865 when, some of the Black members listed on Emmaus’ church roll and others who had moved from Charles City County, started a house to house prayer band. SLBC continues to be a beacon of hope in the New Kent Community and beyond.

Happy 151st Anniversary!!!!!!
I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. It is my pleasure to share with you in another year of ministry as we celebrate 151 years here at Second Liberty Baptist Church. What a mighty God we serve! God continues to show how faithful he is to his children by continuing to bless us and keep us as only he can. This year has been filled with many ups and downs, but God.
Let us take this time to remember all that God has done over the past year: allowing us to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr through a great MLK Day service; commemoration of Black History Month; our Sunrise Service for Resurrection Sunday; Vacation Bible School in June; Faith Night with the Flying Squirrels; and the publishing of the book On The Shoulders of Giants: The Legacy of Second Liberty Baptist Church.
I look forward to and stand in great expectation for what is to come this next year, our “Year of Growth”. As the scriptures remind us in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Second Liberty, let us continue to love God, trust God, and honor God through ministry.
Happy 151st Anniversary!!!!!!
